I Can Feel It.

I can just feel it. Feel it coming. Summer that is. It's something you just feel without almost conciously knowing. It's not about the date on the calendar, the last day of school. It's about that feeling, you know?

The heat is slow and lethargic and makes your lungs feel heavy. The air is thick, and a cool breeze is a miracle. The ceiling fan starts getting turned on at night; helping you drift away to the clink, clink, clink of the pulls as they hit the bulbs.

You forget what a heat headache feels like after months of no sunshine and when you get one for the first time, you almost welcome it with wide arms because you know what it brings after. Clear nights when the birds still chip at nine and soft grass that's perfect for running around bare foot.

Bugs. bugs, bugs, bugs. Hardworking ants, worrisome wasps, and my favorite: the brilliant lightening bug. Although all may make your skin crawl, they are a prelude to what's to come.

Rolling thunderstorms that come as fast as they go. Where the rain has a certain smell and the hairs on your back rise and you get a shiver down your spine. Warm yellow buttercups popping up along the street sides, in your neighbors yards, in thousands across empty fields. I don't care if they're weeds.

You know, I really can't place my finger on it. How to describe properly what all of this feels like. I guess you can't because the purpose is just that: to feel. I wish I could document the feeling that comes along with this in-between season though. Write down so that I can be taken back to this time whenever I want, whatever day, whatever weather. Because it's perfect. It really, really is and I want to bottle it up and keep it for myself, displaying it in a little mason jar on my vanity, tied up with a lace ribbon.

I wonder if God is proud of all of this He's created. I wonder what His favorite part is. I wonder if He knows a small, dreaming girl named Lauren appreciates it all.

With much love, Lauren.
